  • tab2About the Scholarship

In 1987, John W. Rollins established the John W. Rollins Scholarships at The Fuqua School of Business. From 1988 through 1994, the scholarships were awarded to second-year students in the MBA program. In 1995, Mr. Rollins generously expanded the program to also include first-year students. In 1999, he endowed the program to ensure its continuation in perpetuity. Over one hundred Fuqua students have received Rollins Scholarships since 1987.

Rollins Scholarships honor those students who take advantage of the many opportunities for involvement outside the classroom while meeting high academic standards. The scholarships are awarded to second-year students who have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership during their first year of study in the MBA program. First-year students are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic accomplishment, leadership, service and the potential to excel in the Fuqua community.

The Rollins family's generous support through the Rollins Scholarships eases the financial burden for students and helps attract outstanding leaders to Fuqua.

    John W. Rollins

John W. Rollins exemplified the hard work and entrepreneurial spirit that are keys to success in the business world. His long and distinguished career spanned business enterprises, investments and public service.
Born in Keith, Georgia in 1916, Mr. Rollins was founder and chairman of the board of Rollins Truck Leasing Corp., a NYSE company sold to Penske. He was also founder and former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Rollins Environmental Services, Inc. (now Safety-Kleen, Inc.), a major hazardous waste treatment and disposal company traded on the NYSE.

He also founded and chaired the board of Dover Downs Entertainment, Inc., which owns and operates the Dover Downs International Speedway, the Dover Downs Raceway and a video lottery casino at a multipurpose gaming and entertainment complex. He also directed Rollins, Inc., Matlack Systems, Inc. and RPC Energy Services, Inc. In addition, he was chairman of Rollins Jamaica, Ltd., which owns Rose Hall Plantation in Jamaica.

Before starting his own business in 1945, Mr. Rollins held a variety of jobs, including laborer, boilermaker, government ordinance inspector, plant manager and management consultant. His career also extended to public service. From 1953 to 1957 he served as lieutenant governor of Delaware, president of the State Senate and president of the State Pardons Board. In 1960, he was the Republican candidate for Governor of Delaware.

Mr. Rollins received numerous awards and honorary degrees during his lifetime, including the Horatio Alger Award in 1963. He was chairman emeritus of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans and received Delaware's highest honor paid to a citizen of the state, The Josiah Marvel Cup Award in 1997. In 1999, The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University presented this generous philanthropist with an award for exemplary service to the school.

Mr. Rollins is survived by the former Michele Metrinko and their four children. Mr. Rollins had 10 children total, two of whom are alumni of The Fuqua School of Business: Theodore W. Rollins, Class of 1986, and Jeffrey W. Rollins, Class of 1988. Jamie Rollins, a granddaughter and attorney, earned her BA from Duke in 1993, and Katie Searby, another granddaughter, graduated with a BA from Duke in 2004.

    Jeffrey W. Rollins

Jeffrey W. Rollins, son of the late John Rollins and dual degree Duke alumnus (Trinity Class of 1987 and Fuqua School of Business Class of 1988) is also committed to helping Fuqua students attain a superior graduate business management education. In 1993, he established the Opportunity Fund Scholarship, which provides assistance to one or more outstanding Fuqua students annually.

Jeff has long been a strong advocate of community service from his days at the Holderness School, where he helped to found the Energy Committee, and other community service projects. For the prep school, he has served as class agent, career mentor, member of the Headmaster's Council, and member of the Major Gifts committee of "The Holderness Challenge."

Jeff is a founding Principal of Context Ventures, Inc. Prior to establishing the firm in the fall of 2001, he was vice president of development for Brandywine Center Management, where he was responsible for development and leasing. Previously, he was with Rollins Environmental Services for ten years, where he managed strategic planning and capital budgeting. He was later named vice president of Rollins Environmental Services, with national responsibility for the company's sales, service and distribution network. He also has prior real estate development experience as vice president of RFP Group Inc., a Marriott Residence Inn developer, and is currently a director of the NYSE-listed Dover Downs Entertainment, Inc.

Jeff and his wife Kim live in Wilmington, Delaware, and have three children.

From 1977 to 1980, she served as associate counsel and corporate secretary at Sun Company.

    Michele has four children.
