Expected Arrival Date
Exchange students visiting during the fall semester are invited, but not required, to attend the week-long first-year orientation program as noted in the academic schedule. Both fall and spring exchange students must arrive in time for the mandatory exchange student orientation and for the first day of classes.
It is strongly recommended that students arrive prior to the exchange student orientation dates to become acclimated to both the city of Durham and The Fuqua School of Business.
Application, Visa and Registration Process
Prospective exchange students from partner institutions are nominated by their home institution. There is no further selection process.
U.S. visa application forms, course registration information and exchange information packet are sent via mail or e-mail to incoming students when their selection by the home institution is confirmed. When completed visa forms and financial support documentation are submitted, the Duke University international office normally takes approximately two weeks to process the papers and will send (or fedex at the student's expense if noted on the form) the visa materials directly to the student.
Duke Unviersity's Visa Services office provides all of the necessary legal work for obtaining appropriate visas at Duke University. Only after you have been accepted should you contact the employees of this office. The Visa Services office serves as a nexus for monitoring and shaping legislation, regulations, and policies at the federal, state and local levels that affect international educational exchange, and for interpreting and applying those directives and controls in the Duke environment.
Duke University's International House provides services to international student and scholars as well as their families. The mission of international house is to assist internationals and their families with orientation and acclimation, enhance cross-cultural interaction through programming and community outreach, and provide advocacy and support for the Duke international community.
Learning Environment/Courses
The Fuqua School of Business maintains excellent facilities for graduate business education. Each semester is divided into two terms: Term 1 & 2 in the Fall semester and Term 3 & 4 in the Spring semester. Exchange students participate in the regular second-year MBA curriculum and may take elective courses only.
Students are expected to enroll in a minimum of five elective courses per semester . Exchange students present for one term only are required to take three courses during that term. Courses meet twice a week for 2.25 hours each. A broad range of choices is available from courses in accounting, decision sciences, economics, finance, health services management, management, marketing, and operations management. All courses are taught in English. Because of the high level of classroom participation, group work and interaction among students and faculty, exchange students must be proficient in spoken English, as well as reading and writing.
Class attendance is mandatory. Class size is approximately 35 - 50 students per class. The final course grade may be based on case analyses, class participation, team projects, oral and written presentations, mid-terms and final papers or examinations. The format varies from class to class. The exam period is during the last three days of each term.
Detailed course listings are available from the Fuqua website. Fall 2009 courses are currently available and a listing of tentative Spring 2010 courses is also available at Course Listings .
